Stay

Beau is getting much better at the "stay" command. He is now great at sitting and waiting for permission to walk out of his crate when I open the door. He also has to sit and wait for permission to eat his food. Beau loves dinnertime, so waiting to chow down is quite a test of his self-control, but he's getting better at it everyday!

Beau also spent some time in my backyard today and I am happy to report that he is not a fence jumper! Some GSP's are talented escape artists, but Beau is not at all interested in finding out what exists on the other side of my fence. He likes it just fine inside the yard and he likes it even better inside the house! :)

The progression of a tug game

Beau is in the game, tugging his little heart out!

Beau's foster sister gets tired and lays down. Neither pup gives up though! They are both still tugging away!

Beau starts to get a little tired too, so he lays down with his foster sister and they tug while enjoying the comfy dog pillow. :)

The tug match is turning into a little snuggle time on the pillow (although neither dog lets go of the rope). :)

They literally fell asleep like this! Both pups still had the rope in their mouths and Beau was giving his foster sister a little hug as well. :)

Beau is such a sweet, playful boy!!

Tug war!

My Labrador is an expert at playing tug. Most dogs play with her a little bit, then give up quickly when they see how serious she is about the game of tug. I have never seen her lose a game of tug, but Beau is giving her a run for her money!! Beau LOVES to tug on a rope and he never gives up. I don't want Beau to get too worn out since he's supposed to be resting so I don't let them play for very long. I always have to end the tug war so I have never seen who would win. I wouldn't be surprised if Beau beat my Lab. He is definitely her best competitor yet!!

Beau is a champion at "Sit"

Beau is great at sitting on command. He obeys a "sit" command about 95% of the time the first time I say it (every now and then I have to say it twice), however if I have a treat in my hand he obeys the sit command a perfect 100%. :)

I tried to get Beau to sit and pose for the camera so everyone can see what a good looking boy he is, but we ran into a little snag... I say "sit" and Beau instantly sits! He's such a good boy. :) Then I walk a few steps away and I call his name to try to get him to look at the camera, which Beau interprets as, "You are calling my name! You must love me! I love you too! I'll come right over to you so you can pet me!!".

Looks like our next lesson will be "stay". :)

Meet Beau!

Beau is a handsome, young, male German Shorthaired Pointer who's just filled with love for everybody!! Beau is incredibly affectionate with people and also loves to have fun with other dogs. He is reported to be good with cats too, although his current foster Mom hasn't confirmed this.

Beau is a young (about 1 year old), energetic guy, but was treated for heartworms on 6/14 & 6/15, so his activity level is currently being restricted. Beau would love to play and run around, however he'll need to continue to rest for another 5 weeks. He absolutely loves to be with his people and would be very happy if they played with him, but he's also perfectly content snuggling up next to his foster Mom and letting her pet on him. This boy loves to be loved on!!

Beau has a Labrador sister and GSP brother at his foster home, and he is great with both of them. He'd really like run and play with the other pups out in the backyard, but hanging out in the house is okay with him too. :) He loves to play tug of war and he really enjoys a good stuffed toy - especially if it has a squeaker inside!! I suspect Beau would be excited about playing fetch, but since he's not ready to run around yet, we haven't tried that.

Beau is still learning basic commands, but he is proving to be a quick student. He knows sit, and he is so excited when you call his name that he always come leaping to you just as fast as he can! Beau doesn't appear to be very birdy. He'd rather focus on his people than search for critters, which will probably make him easy to train as an off-leash dog.
